A tiny device that sits on your desk and reacts to you lives or dies on three unglamorous things: how it is built, how it is powered, and how it is cared for. The personality is the easy part. Here is how to judge the rest.
How these little devices actually work
Most desk companions share the same recipe: a small microcontroller, one or two sensors for touch or light, a motor or two for movement, and a battery. The illusion of character comes from timing, not intelligence. A short pause before a reaction reads as hesitation; a quick repeated motion reads as excitement. Good ones spend their engineering budget on that timing.

Injection-moulded plastic is the norm and that is fine; what matters is the seam. Run a fingernail along the joint. A ridge you can catch means loose tolerances, and loose tolerances are where dust and damage get in.
The moving parts
Any device that moves has the shortest lifespan at its joints. Gentle, geared movement lasts; fast, snappy movement is charming for a week and worn out in a season. Listen for a smooth whir rather than a grinding tick.

A rechargeable device that idles most of the day should last many days on a charge. If it needs charging nightly while barely doing anything, the power management is poor and the built-in cell will fade fast.
The most common mistake — leaving a rechargeable device on the charger permanently. Lithium cells last longest cycling between roughly twenty and eighty per cent, not sitting full and warm. If it can run off the charger, let it.
Care that actually extends the life
- Keep it out of direct sun on a windowsill; heat is the enemy of both plastic and battery.
- Wipe the shell with a barely damp cloth, never a soaked one; moisture in the seam reaches the board.
- Clear dust from any vents or joints with a soft dry brush, not compressed air, which drives grit inward.
- If it moves, give the joints a rest; continuous motion wears gears faster than anything else.
